Which treatment works best for acne scars?

Acne scars, from pitted texture to discolouration or raised scar tissue, can be visibly reduced at SKIN with fractional laser, microneedling and PRX-T33 that stimulate new collagen. Fractional laser is often the most effective choice for deeper scars. For deeper scars, the skin therapist often combines several techniques over a course of sessions. Results build up gradually and usually need more than one treatment.

Our approach

Why see a skin therapist for acne scars

Acne scars are not all the same, which makes the right approach important. Our skin therapists are trained at HBO level (Dutch professional bachelor level) and recognise the different types: indented scars (ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars), raised scar tissue, and discolouration that is actually pigmentation rather than a true scar. That diagnosis determines which technique is worthwhile and which is not.

Every treatment starts with a skin analysis. We assess the scar type, the depth, your skin type and whether any active acne is present. We treat active acne first, because correcting scars while new ones keep forming makes little sense. From there we build a realistic plan with a timeline and an honest picture of what is achievable.

Safety comes first. Microneedling and peels are not suitable with active inflammation or open acne in the zone, with blood thinners, during a course of isotretinoin, or during pregnancy. We are also cautious with a tendency toward keloid scarring. The skin therapist always assesses these contra-indications beforehand.

Realistic expectations are part of good care. Acne scars can be visibly reduced and the skin made smoother and more even, but they rarely disappear completely. For very deep or extensive scarring, an additional medical treatment may be needed; in that case we refer you to a dermatologist, as that falls outside a skin therapist's scope of practice. As an expat, note that a dermatologist referral usually goes through your GP (huisarts).

Frequently asked questions

How much does acne scar treatment cost in Amsterdam?

Pricing depends on the type of scar and the technique. Fractional laser starts from €125 for a single spot or scar line and goes up to €450 for the full face. Microneedling for acne scars starts from €150 per session, and a combination of PRX-T33 with microneedling from €190. For deeper scars we work with a course of several sessions. During the consultation (from €100) we set out the plan and the expected cost.

Which treatment works best for acne scars?

It depends on the type of scar. For deeper pitted scars and raised scar tissue, fractional laser is often the most effective choice, as it triggers deep repair and new collagen formation. For shallower pitted scars and uneven texture, microneedling often works well. PRX-T33 and targeted peels improve skin quality, and IPL can help with red or brown discolouration. The skin therapist often combines several techniques for the best result.

How many treatments will I need?

Reducing scars takes time because the skin needs to build new collagen. Usually 3 to 6 treatments are needed, a few weeks apart. Results build up gradually and are clearest after the full course. The exact number depends on the scar type and your skin.

Can acne scars disappear completely?

Acne scars can be visibly reduced and the skin can become smoother and more even, but they rarely disappear completely. Deep, indented scars are harder to correct than superficial discolouration. We give an honest picture beforehand of what is achievable for your skin.

Is acne scar treatment suitable for everyone?

Most treatments suit almost every skin type, but there are contra-indications. We do not treat active acne or inflammation in the zone, and avoid treatment with blood thinners, during a course of isotretinoin, or during pregnancy. A tendency toward keloid scarring is also discussed beforehand. The skin therapist assesses this during the consultation.

Is acne scar treatment covered by Dutch health insurance?

Acne scar treatments at SKIN count as cosmetic skin care and are not covered by the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering). Some supplementary policies offer limited coverage for skin therapy, so check with your own insurer beforehand.
