How we approach acne
Acne rarely has a single cause, so it rarely has a single fix. Our skin therapists combine clinical techniques into a plan that suits your skin. These are the treatments we use most often across our Amsterdam clinics.
Acne Treatment (medical facial)
A medical deep-cleanse that targets clogged pores, blackheads and inflamed spots. Includes extractions, calming active ingredients and homecare advice. From €85 per session.
Learn moreChemical Peel
A peel with acids such as salicylic or glycolic acid reduces oil production, unclogs pores and calms inflammation. Effective for comedonal and mild to moderate acne. From €100 per session, usually as a course of 4 to 6 treatments.
Learn moreIntake Consultation
Not sure which approach suits your skin? Start with an intake consultation, including a skin analysis. Your skin therapist puts together a personal step-by-step plan, including expected cost and timeline. From €100.

Why see a skin therapist for acne
Treating acne without understanding its cause often leads to disappointment, or worse, a flare-up. Our skin therapists are trained at HBO level (Dutch professional bachelor level) and specialise in recognising the different types of acne, from comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads) to papulopustular and cystic acne. That diagnosis determines which treatment is appropriate, and which is not.
Every treatment starts with a skin analysis. We assess oil production, inflammation, the skin barrier and any scarring, and use that to build a realistic treatment plan with a timeline and an expected outcome.
Safety comes first. Some acne treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or alongside an active course of isotretinoin (Roaccutane), because the skin becomes more sensitive to peels and laser light. We also postpone treatment if there is an open infection, a cold sore or another active skin infection.
For severe cystic acne, a suspected underlying hormonal cause, or if there is no improvement after several sessions, we refer you to a GP or dermatologist. They can prescribe medication such as antibiotics or isotretinoin, which falls outside a skin therapist's scope of practice. As an expat in the Netherlands, note that you'll usually need a referral from your GP (huisarts) before you can see a dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an acne treatment cost in Amsterdam?
Pricing depends on the treatment and the number of sessions. A deep-cleanse facial starts from €85, a chemical peel from €100 per session, and an intake consultation from €100. Most treatment plans involve a course of 4 to 6 sessions for a stable result.
How long does it take before acne visibly improves?
Most clients notice the first improvement in skin texture and inflammation after 3 to 4 treatments, spread over 6 to 8 weeks. The exact timeline depends on the type of acne and how consistently you follow the homecare routine.
Is acne treatment covered by Dutch health insurance?
Treatments at SKIN count as cosmetic skin care and are not covered by the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering). Some supplementary policies offer limited coverage for skin therapy, so check with your own insurer beforehand.
Who is acne treatment at SKIN suitable for?
Our treatments suit teenagers and adults with comedonal, papulopustular or mild cystic acne. For moderate to severe inflammation, active isotretinoin use, or pregnancy, we determine during the consultation whether, and which, treatment is responsible.
Is there any downtime after an acne treatment?
After a deep-cleanse facial or mild peel, the skin may look red and feel sensitive for a few hours to a day; make-up is usually fine again the next day. With a more intensive peel, expect mild flaking for three to five days.
What results can I expect from acne treatment?
A treatment course reduces inflammation, impurities and excess oil, and helps keep new breakouts under control. We cannot guarantee acne will disappear completely. The aim is calmer, more even-looking skin and a lower risk of scarring.
